AlgaeBase also includes a comprehensive Glossary compiled by one of us (ACM): some 28,160 terms are currently defined and each one has a comprehensive explanation, and, where appropriate, detailed notes on the origin of each.
AlgaeBase is a global species database of information on all groups of algae, as well as one group of flowering plants, the sea-grasses. [2] AlgaeBase evolved from Michael Guiry 's seaweed website, and has grown into a database of algae from throughout the world, and in freshwater, terrestrial , and brackish as well as marine habitats. [1]
It is also a work in progress, and is thus incomplete. Please note that AlgaeBase is purely meant as an aid to taxonomic studies and not a definitive source in its own right. You should always check the information included prior to use. Classification: Algaebase.

It is a member of the carotenes, which are terpenoids (isoprenoids), synthesized biochemically from eight isoprene units and thus having 40 carbons. Abstract and Figures In development since 1996, AlgaeBase (http://www.algaebase.org) is an on-line database providing free access to authoritative taxonomic, distributional and nomenclatural Invasive Species Compendium. Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide This glossary contains terms likely to be used in volumes of the Algae of Australia.

Classification: Algaebase. NATIVE. Vertical Distribution: Common at 30-34m in central California (Spalding et al. 2003). In southern California, Eisenia has a bimodal distribution, occurring in a shallow zone (low intertidal - 15m) and a deeper zone below 20m. Frequency: Common. Substrate: Rock. Type locality: Santa Catalina Island, California.
In addition to the green, green-blue, red, and brown coloration of healthy cyanobacteria, damaged cells may appear turquoise and white as chlorophyll breaks down. Foams may also develop when cell contents are whipped up by waves. Note that foam is also formed when aquatic plants or other algae die. Figure A-1.

Compiled by John M. Huisman and Timothy J. Entwisle This glossary contains terms likely to be used in volumes of the Algae of Australia. References used in its compilation are given at the end of the chapter. Where possible, the definitions conform with those in the Flora of Australia and Fungi of Australia, but some have meanings peculiar to algae.

Glossary Synonym: are different scientific names that pertain to the same taxon, for example two names for the same species. One basic principle of zoological nomenclature is that the earliest correctly published and available name (the senior synonym) takes precedence and must be used for the taxon, if no other restrictions interfere.
